Naan is just the beginning. Explore roti, paratha, puri, dosa, and kulcha — the diverse world of Indian breads.
5 Types of Indian Bread Beyond Naan
If you think Indian bread begins and ends with naan, you're missing out on an incredible world of flavors and textures. India has dozens of regional breads, each with its own character. Here are five you should try.
1. Roti (Chapati)
The everyday bread of India. Roti is made from whole wheat flour (atta) and cooked on a flat griddle called a tawa. Unlike naan, it contains no yeast or dairy — just flour, water, and a touch of salt.
Texture: Thin, soft, slightly chewy Best with: Any curry, dal, or dry vegetable dish Dietary note: Vegan and dairy-free
2. Paratha
Paratha is roti's richer cousin. The dough is layered with ghee (clarified butter) and folded multiple times, creating flaky, buttery layers. Stuffed parathas filled with spiced potatoes (aloo paratha), paneer, or cauliflower are a breakfast staple across North India.
Texture: Flaky, layered, slightly crispy Best with: Yogurt, pickle, and chai for breakfast; any curry for dinner Dietary note: Contains dairy (ghee)
3. Puri
Puri is a deep-fried bread that puffs up into a golden balloon when it hits hot oil. It's celebratory and indulgent — often served at festivals, weddings, and special occasions.
Texture: Crispy, puffy, light Best with: Chole (chickpea curry), potato curry, or halwa Dietary note: Vegan (when fried in vegetable oil)
4. Dosa
Technically a crepe, dosa is a South Indian staple made from fermented rice and lentil batter. It's crispy, tangy, and completely different from North Indian breads. A masala dosa comes stuffed with spiced potatoes.
Texture: Paper-thin and crispy Best with: Sambar (lentil stew) and coconut chutney Dietary note: Naturally gluten-free and vegan
5. Kulcha
Kulcha is naan's lesser-known sibling — leavened bread typically stuffed with spiced onions, paneer, or potatoes, then baked in a tandoor. Amritsari kulcha, from the city of Amritsar in Punjab, is legendary.
Texture: Soft, stuffed, slightly crispy exterior Best with: Chole, raita, or any rich curry Dietary note: Contains dairy
